It never ceases to amaze me how so many artists can take items destined to become landfill fodder and turn them into something utterly beautiful. As the old saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Here I have selected ten examples of some of the most attractive eco-art I’ve stumbled upon online.

1.) Bright butterfly.-This gorgeous yellow butterfly and others like it are created using old license plates, mirrors, trash can lids, and car parts basically whatever found objects are at hand. For a closer look at the finer details of these large moth art pieces (and a perspective on how large they really are!) check out this post about artist Michelle Stitzlein in the Eco Artware Notes blog.

ecycled materials that include license plates, car parts, mirrors, trash can lids, piano keys, bicycle tires, scrap wood, bottlecaps, aluminum siding, faucet handles, oil drum lids and phone hand sets. via Junk Mail Gems Blog.

2.) Treasure Furniture.-Using scraps from a furniture factory, artist Maarten Baas of Holland makes stunning modern pieces of furniture. Take a closer look at some of the eclectic pieces he’s put together here under “Works” and “Treasure Furniture.”

Built using waste from a furniture factory. Enough waste to produce 58 dining chairs and 23 armchairs. This makes the Treasure series a limited edition...

3.) Colorful faces- Artist Sandhi Schimmel uses brightly colored print ads to make art featuring women’s faces.

These beautiful mosaic portraits were made out of recycled print ads

4.) “Scribbled” chairs-If you could take a crayon and messily scribble a chair into thin air, it would probably come out looking something like this. The super cool chairs are made out of old plastic.

Photo; www.ecofriend.org- Design Council’s dot07.com festival in UK

5.) Rainbow lighting- Plastic is put to good use once more with this rainbow lighting using various colorful plastic containers, the concept of artist David Batchelor. I had to look twice before I realized trash was involved. Here’s another look at how stunning this trash art really is.

he installation are made of used plastic containers. Found at Recycleart.com

6.) Technicolor celebrities-If Andy Warhol made art today using junk, his pieces might look a little something like this. Featured are pieces of art depicting Conan O’Brian and Lady Gaga using old tech junk.

Artist Jason Mecier creates amazing art with discarded electronic junk.

7.) Art in sneaker form- These shoes by Gabriel Dishaw really are works of art and made out of pure junk. See more of his work here.

Gabriel Dishaw, a junk-metal genius from Carmel, Ind., turns trash into artwork.

8.) Organic shapes-These massive pieces of artwork fashioned out of construction scrap wood are simply breathtaking.

Henrique Oliveira has been creating organic shapes out of scrap wood that began to peel off of a fence by his home

9.) Trashy wave-One of my favorite pieces of art is Hokusai’s “The Great Wave.” Imagine how thrilled I was to find the stunning wave composed in trash art by artist Bernard Pras.

Trash Art by www.bernardpras.fr

10.) Wild horses-Using found objects such as plastic toys and various old utensils artist Sayaka Ganz made these stunning horses that appear to be bursting forth through a wall in spirit form.

Ganz recovers junk and upcycles it into animal shaped sculptures.

The history of artists embracing the natural world is long and storied. One need only look at the work of naturalist writers, landscape artists, and hippie songsters to see the progression of creative patrons of the planet. And the trend seems to be picking up as more focus is placed on issues like pollution, climate change, loss of habitat, and sustainability. Modern artists are finding amazing ways to get their message of eco-conscious activism out to the public. While many ply their craft in an eco-friendly manner (by utilizing tour buses that run on biodiesel, studios powered with green energy, and practices that generally reduce waste and pollution), others support and donate to environmentally friendly organizations and causes (Greenpeace, Live Aid, etc.). But whatever their eco-bent, a number of artists are going above and beyond the call of duty to promote the health of the planet in ways that have a huge impact.

1. Green Day. Does it get any greener than proudly displaying your eco-sensibilities in the name of your rock band? These punk-rockers from Cali may look like they just stepped out of the emo rainforest, but they’ve done their part to support clean energy by teaming up with the National Resources Defense Council (which focuses on global warming, clean energy, conservancy, and sustainability) and urging fans to lobby Congress for a boost in eco-friendly job creation.

2. Andy Goldsworthy. If you’ve never heard of this nature artist/photographer, you are missing out on a goldmine of Goldsworthy. His works of art are truly transitional and support the spirit of sustainability. He uses only objects found in nature to craft his beautiful, complex, and temporary art (which he then photographs). And when he’s done, his masterpieces are left to be swept away by the very forces from whence they came.

Joseph Beuys

3. Joseph Beuys. A conceptual artist who espouses an idea of eco-artwork, Beuys has done several projects to bring attention to environmental problems as well as bust the myth that people and nature cannot co-exist. For example, one project required him to spend hours locked in a room with a coyote while another included planting 7,000 oak trees around the city of Kassel, Germany. His efforts serve to illuminate environmental issues in a creative way that demands attention.

4. James Cameron. Many would argue that commercial films are not to be considered in the same category as “serious” art. However, one look at Cameron’s beautifully imagined enviro-activist film Avatar (2009) blows that theory out of the water. Stunningly crafted CGI takes the audience inside a natural world that, much like the Earth, needs protection from the corrupting influence of industry.

5. Pearl Jam. No grunge group has done more than this Seattle standby to effect a change in the way our planet runs. They work to offset the carbon emissions of touring, protect the Earth’s valuable remaining rainforests, and have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the climate change cause. They even foster eco-awareness with songs like “Do the Evolution” and “Amongst the Waves”.

Have I been sleeping?
I’ve been so still
Afraid of crumbling
Have I been careless?
Dismissing all the distant rumblings
Take me where I am supposed to be
To comprehend the things that I can’t see

Cause I need to move
I need to wake up
I need to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Something’s got to break up
I’ve been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

And as a child
I danced like it was 1999
My dreams were wild
The promise of this new world
Would be mine
Now I am throwing off the carelessness of youth
To listen to an inconvenient truth

That I need to move
I need to wake up
I need to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Something’s got to break up
I’ve been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

I am not an island
I am not alone
I am my intentions
Trapped here in this flesh and bone

And I need to move
I need to wake up
I need to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Something’s got to break up
I’ve been asleep
And I need to wake up
Now

I want to change
I need to shake up
I need to speak out
Oh, Something’s got to break up
I’ve been asleep
And I need to wake upSimilar Posts:

Nathaniel Stookeys “Junkestra”, composed during his 2007 artist residency at Recology San Francisco. The work in three movements is performed with percussion instruments created from materials Stookey scavenged from the dump. The work was first presented in a warehouse at the Recology San Francisco facility in 2007, and following its overwhelming success, was later performed to capacity crowds at the Herbst Theater. It has been presented many times since, most notably to mark the opening of the new California Academy of Sciences building in Golden Gate Park.

During his four month residency at Recology, Stookey assembled what he called a sonorous collection of pipes, pans, mixing bowls, bottles, serving trays, deck railings, dresser drawers, oil drums, bike wheels, saws, garbage cans, bathroom fixtures, bird-cages and shopping carts. The result, he said, is a richer palette of timbre and pitch than anything I could have foreseen or designed. Junkestra will be released by Innova Records in late April, 2010. Innova will also issue a dance mix version of Junkestra.Similar Posts:

Instead of giving now the guitar your teenager has been screaming for, wait until January and re-surprise with this new eco- friendly guitar made with FSC Certified Wood.

Beginning January 2010, WALDEN will enable guitarists to make purchasing decisions that benefit our environment and take part in reducing the overconsumption of world resources. Its all-solid wood MADERA line will be built with 100% FSC-Pure certified tonewoods such as Sitka spruce, Western Red cedar, and South American “True” mahogany. With an FSC Chain-of-Custody (“COC”) certification, all woods on the MADERA are tracked from forest to finished instrument thereby guaranteeing its sustainable origins. With a target street price USD$999, the all-solid WALDEN MADERA is the most affordable sustainable wood guitar in the market.

“We all share the same world and we all need to do our part to be a part of the solution and ensure we live in a sustainable way,” says Jonathan Lee, Chief Designer behind Walden guitars. “Ecologically friendly products are in high demand but sustainable-wood acoustic guitars are rare and expensive. ‘Green acoustic guitars’ made by ethically run factories in Mainland China do not exist; until now. Obtaining certification and building with FSC-Pure materials is the only way we can be sure that we are honestly obtaining woods from responsible sources. However, these sources are rare at this time. It is my hope that demand for these instruments will aid in certifying more forests around the world and make sustainable living commonplace.”

WALDEN chose the name MADERA for its association with the Spanish word for “wood.” Guitars in this line can be easily recognized by a distinctive headstock embellishment shaped like the Chinese character “木” meaning wood. At the 2010 Winter NAMM Convention, WALDEN will present five acoustic guitars in the MADERA line with Dreadnought and Grand Auditorium models in natural and sunburst finishes as well as a classical guitar.

More information on the MADERA line will be coming soon.
