The Department of Transportation, as part of its “Clean Up NJ” initiative, also removed 51,000 square yards of graffiti.

And Transportation Commissioner James S. Simpson told the Assembly Budget Committee Thursday that as soon as the department is finished cleaning up from another one of the five toughest winters in the last 80 years, it will return to the litter and graffiti cleanup campaign.

New Jersey roadways are about to look a lot nicer thanks to a new campaign by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

James S. Simpson, NJDOT Commissioner, said the project, “Clean Up NJ,” will concentrate NJDOT maintenance forces to make noticeable improvements in the appearance of New Jersey roadways.

“With this ongoing campaign, we will target specific locations and handle all maintenance issues in a single sweep,” Simpson said. “We’ll clean up litter, cover up graffiti, cut overgrown vegetation and do whatever it takes to produce a positive impact.”

In the first round, Simpson said, maintenance crews in the northern part of the state focused efforts on sections of I-80 and Route 24. Central New Jersey crews selected numerous locations rather than a single corridor while crews in the southern part of the state focused on litter, graffiti and weeds along major corridors. All together, crews picked up 170 tons of litter, painted over 30,660 square yards of graffiti, mowed 1,330 acres of tall grass and removed heavy brush and trees from 134 acres of land along state highways, he said.

Stephen Spacek- the voice of litter in America just sent this updated information on New Jersey and Litter. Stephen is the Author of The American State Litter Scorecard.

I Just Gotta Tell Ya

There are an estimated 500,000 dogs in New Jersey. An average dog produces one pound of waste per day.

About half of the nutrients and herbicides/pesticides applied to lawns in the New Jersey coastal zone enter streams, bays, and the ocean.

About half of New Jersey’s hard clam beds are closed because of high bacteria counts due to pointless pollution.

In nine of ten New Jersey beach closures due to high fecal coliform bacteria, the cause is contaminated stormwater runoff. This runoff comes from streets, sidewalks, lawns and the rest of the land upstream of the coast and is carried to the ocean, unfiltered and unchecked, through storm drains.

One gallon of oil dumped down a storm drain can create a slick up to eight acres, and may pollute up to one million gallons of drinking water.

Worldwide, it is estimated that one trillion cigarette butts are littered every year.

According to the Ocean Conservancy, the amount of nicotine trapped in 200 cigarette filters is enough to kill a human being.

Consequences: Ugly New Jersey City Litter!

Deliberately heavy litter/dumping by young males under age 25 and construction contractors

Littering/dumping annually kills over 20 NJ residents statewide in vehicle accidents

City Streets needs waste cans!

State needs statewide anti-litter slogan (most states already have)

State, local police not enforcing clean comnuities Act and local anti-litter laws— convicted violators not paying fines.

State needs litter reporting hot line

Improve Highway maintenance activity, compared to New York state, Connecticut and 47 other US states

NJ Dept. of Environmental Protection and Clean Communities Council needs new personnel!

Need statewide beverage deposits legislation and litter source taxation

STOP UGLY, DEADLY LITTERING IN NEW JERSEY NOW!!!

The New Jersey Clean Communities Council (NJCC) announces the launching of its statewide public education anti-litter campaign — Slam Dunk the Junk. The campaign is aimed at New Jersey residents and visitors, encouraging them to keep New Jersey clean and green through individual and group activities.

The campaign was officially launched at the NJCC’s Sixth Annul Kids for Clean Communities Seminar and Awards Banquet — a three-day event that was headlined by Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker and the Harlem Wizards.

“We are thrilled about the Slam Dunk the Junk campaign and we are hoping that the program will have a positive impression on all New Jerseyans,” said Sandy Huber, Executive Director of the New Jersey Clean Communities Council. “It is critical that we get school children involved and engaged in activities that are beneficial to our state’s environment and the NJCC is confident that the Slam Dunk the Junk is just the vehicle to do that.”

The slogan for the Slam Dunk the Junk campaign was recreated by East Orange sixth grader Quamir Payton. Payton, a seasoned environmentalist, will serve as the ceremonious statewide ambassador for the entire state.

“I want everyone to help me to pitch in and make the garden state sparkle and remember to always Slam Dunk the Junk,” said Quamir Payton, Slam Dunk the Junk campaign ambassador and East Orange sixth grader.

Huber continues, “Quamir is an amazing young man who understands that action is more than words. His passion for wanting to enhance our environment is an inspiration to us all. It will certainly be a pleasure working with him during this campaign.”

Other anti-litter initiatives spearheaded by the NJCC include the Clean Communities Environmental Student Exchange — a program that provides opportunities for student to learn about litter and waste in regions other than their own, Kids for Clean Communities Coalition and the Urban Clean-Up Team.

The state flower of New Jersey was originally designated as such by a resolution of the Legislature in 1913. Unfortunately the force of resolution ended with the start of the 1914 legislative session, leaving the violet with uncertain status for the next fifty years. In 1963 an attempt was made to have the Legislature “officially” designate the violet as the state flower, but the legislation apparently failed. In 1971, at the urging of New Jersey’s garden clubs, legislation more specifically designating the Common Meadow Violet (Viola sororia) as the state flower was enacted.
