Many people will read this and say well the money to clean up litter and illegal dumping comes from a grant- Let me ask you, where does the grant money come from? Taxpayers.

New Mexico Clean and Beautiful gives out grants for illegal dumping clean up, beautification and litter control. Lobato said last year alone, $600,000 was distributed to communities around the state of New Mexico.

“In 2010 we had more than 39,000 volunteers around the state cleaning up 298 dump sites,” he said. That added up to 243,757 hours of volunteer work.

The New Mexico Environment Department also grants money to clean up illegal dumping, as part of their effort to stop it. We give out grants every January,” said Tim Gray, environment specialist outreach at NMED. “Last year we gave out $125,000 to cleaning up non-tire illegal dumps, and $125,000 supporting recycling. The other two-thirds of the budget went to clean up illegal tire dumps.”

CARLSBAD, N.M., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Xcel Energy today announced that it has extended its already successful Refrigerator Recycling Program into 2010. Residents now have until the end of the year to recycle old appliances and get a cash incentive.

The Refrigerator Recycling Program offers residential electric customers a $35 rebate and a free pick up of their old, working refrigerators. Over 95% of the appliance is properly destroyed and recycled which prevents it from going into a landfill. The program started in May 2009 and is administered by Appliance Recycling Centers of America, Inc. It will now run until December 31, 2010.

“Our goal is to improve energy efficiency in our service territory and make it really easy for customers to get rid of their old appliances,” says Kelsey Burich, Program Manager, Xcel Energy. “The cheapest energy out there is the energy we don’t have to produce. Using less helps all of us lower our bills and put money back in our pockets.”

The $35 recycling incentive is automatically mailed to the customer within three to four weeks after pick up.

The yucca was adopted as the State Flower on March 14, 1927. The yucca is a member of the lily family and a symbol of sturdiness as well as beauty. In the early summer, pale ivory flowers bloom at the tips of its long, fibrous stalks. At the base of the plant are broad, sharpedged leaves that look like stilettos. The yucca sometimes grows to the height of a small tree.

Environmental New Mexico Mountains, grasslands and desert landscapes are a core part of New Mexico’s natural beauty. Unfortunately, mega-developers like Verde Group and SunCal are rushing to convert our lands into sprawling subdivisions — and they want us to pay for it. Because a tax giveaway rewards developers with billions of taxpayer dollars for more sprawl, there’s a new land rush in New Mexico. To stop this land rush, we need to close down the tax sprawl subsidy before New Mexico’s open space and quality of life is damaged beyond repair.
