I had done a post on Top 70 Eco Paints- but still paint is paint and no matter if it has zero VOC’s you still have to get rid of it. Now-California has launched a new program to address the issue of old paint. California Product Stewardship Council in a grant from Waste Management is setting out to educate consumers about the use and disposal of paint.

I Just Gotta Tell Ya:

  • California spends $16 Million annually to dispose of hazardous paint- about $8.00/gallon of taxpayer cost.
  • In 2000 California collected 17.2 millions pounds of leftover paint.
  • Latex paint can be recycled into new paint-it can be processed to make concrete and reused into new paint.

What You Can Do

  1. Buy Recycled Latex Paint see listing for companies that manufacture recycled latex paint in California.
  2. Calculate carefully the amount of paint you need. Try using this Paint Calculator for the Paint Quality Institute to tell you how much you need to purchase.
  3. Buy Green Seal Certified Paint in which recycling costs decrease
  4. Use up leftover paint for other projects
  5. Store paint properly to kepp fresh.
  6. Reuse or recycle leftover paint- consider posting on sites such as Craigslist to get rid of
  7. Ask your paint store to recycle your leftover paint

Where to Get Free Recycled Paint:

  • Check out Craigslist in your area
  • Check your local Hazardous Waste Facility- many offer ‘Free Paint Days’
  • Plano Texas-The City of Plano Sustainability & Environmental Services Department operates a Household Chemical Reuse Center where Plano residents may obtain reusable household products, collected through the residential chemical collection program and approved for reuse, for free.
  • San Francisco-Hazardous Waste Collection, on Recycle Road off of Tunnel Avenue- between 8am and 4pm Thursday through Saturday.

Benjamin Moore- Eco Paint Review

Paint Review.

I went to Bayside Paints, which has the largest selection of Eco Paints in San Diego. The paint company with the widest color selection is Benjamin Moore. I just needed Primer (low VOC) , so bought 1 gallon of Eco Spec Primer. ($23.99) I probably would have bought more paint, if they were a little more customer service oriented. I will give them the benefit of the doubt, it was early Sat. am, and they were busy.

Bayside Paints carries, Yolo Color House ( Color Sample’s for Sale) , Green Devine, Green Planet Paints, Sydney Harbor, Old Milk Paints, Coronado, American Clay and of course Benjamin Moore. Know before you go, there is not a ton of color samples available. The best thing to do is go on bright sunny day to get accurate lighting, take color samples with you to match.

The Eco Spec Primer is much thinner than Kilz or Behr (Home Depot).  It went on very smoothly and dried in a timely manner. They recommend 2 coats, of which I didn’t do.  Just did the one coat and painted over it, which went on easily. Will let you know how it goes after we get the lights in! It was hard to see with a jury-rigged light set up.
