Wine Corks – Reuse Make Money

Written by Cathy on December 5, 2008 – 8:01 am -

Welcome back!

I love my wine, and I love the screw off lids. It is so much easier to get that bottle open, no need to hassle with the corks and corkscrews and best if all, I don’t feel like I’m wasting a cork. I do save corks and have made a bullentin board, gave some to a friend who made Holiday wreaths for gifts. Some of these crafts are so easy to make, and some companies like Wine Enthusiast even sell them online. If they can do it, why can’t you?  Not only can you make and sell, it can be a great gift, that can cost you almost nothing!

I Just Gotta Tell Ya

  • Worldwide, over 13 billion natural cork wine stoppers are sold each year. Natural cork, a biodegradable and sustainable resource, can be recycled in products such as:Flooring tile, Building insulation, Shoe soles, Fishing rod handles, Bulletin boards. Soil conditioners
  • Almost 60% of the worlds production of cork is used in wine production
  • The First Winery to use FSC Certified wine corks is Willamette Valley Vineyards

What can you do?

  • Use as pin holders, especially in sewing, fish hooks
  • Bobber for fishing
  • Protect your sharp knives
  • Cut up/grind and mix in with your plants
  • You can carve one end to make your own stamps.
  • Use as a bottle sealer
  • Stick Earrings into
  • You can make curtains for summer doors ( you know those ones that keep the flys out but allow you walk through
  • Make little table decorations with them or as placecards at the dinner table

Where to Recycle

  • ReCORK America recently announced a partnership with Whole Foods to run a pilot wine cork recycling program in 25 Whole Foods locations in northern California and Reno. The program will run for six months, with collection boxes located in the wine section of each store. Known as ReCORK America, the program is focused on obtaining used and surplus corks from winery tasting rooms, bottling lines and quality assurance laboratories. In addition, collection locations are being established with key retailers and restaurants in larger metropolitan areas. A list of current collection locations is available on this Web site. It should be emphasized that only natural cork is being accepted. No plastic or metal closures please.
  • Yemm & Hart – send in your used wine corks, and it’ll recycle them for you. Wine Cork Recycling

  • Terracycle- TerraCycle Cork Brigade 121 New York Ave. Trenton, NJ 08638. TerraCycle is saving millions of corks from going into landfills.
