Recycle Umbrellas in New York City

Written by Cathy on July 17, 2009 – 7:44 am -

Welcome back!

locallables.com

New York, NY, July 15, 2009 –(PR.com)– A soggy start to summer has left a plethora of broken umbrellas on the city’s streets and in its trash cans. But rather than throw out yet another umbrella after the next rain storm, bring it to the Local Labels kiosk in the Graybar Passageway at Grand Central Terminal to be recycled into stylish bags and totes by fashion designer, Catherine Edouard-Charlot.

Local Labels is the city’s only source for specialty foods and gifts made within the five boroughs. Many of their products are eco-friendly such as recycled stationary, organic and all-natural body products, soy candles, sock monkeys and quilts made from recycled cashmere.

They have teamed up with Himane, a fashion and design company founded by Brooklyn resident, Catherine Edouard-Charlot to collect used and broken umbrellas from water-logged commuters at Grand Central. Catherine refashions the umbrellas into innovatively designed and waterproof bags and totes and Local Labels sells them at the recession-minded price of $15 for a tote, which when folded resembles an umbrella and $45 for a multipurpose and portable folding bag. Local Labels also offers custom bags from the Himane collection.

Local Labels launched in 2007 to support established and emerging small-scale producers in New York City. Their vendors are craftspeople and manufacturers who live and work in New York City and put their hard-earned money back into the local and regional economy.

Buying local strengthens community ties, supports the local economy, decreases our dependency on oil and is more eco-friendly and conscious about health and the environment.

Local Labels is working with businesses that have their manufacturing bases in the New York City area. Local Labels features everything from apparel and accessories to specialty foods and housewares. While some raw materials may not be made in New York City, Local Labels requires that the product be sourced as close to home as possible. All printed apparel must be Made in the USA and printed in NYC. Local Labels features products that are hand selected based on their material content, design and quality.

For corporate orders Local Labels also sources locally. Ordering from area shipping and packing companies their shipped boxes support the local economy and contain little packaging.

About Local Labels:

Local Labels believes in supporting their neighbors by making the best of New York City within reach. From specialty foods to gifts, they have explored the five boroughs and found local bakers, chocolatiers, artists, and manufacturers creating fresh and unique products.

Partners Loren Talbot and Jean Tanler met while studying at the urban planning at Pratt Institute. They identified a large gap in the gift market for locally produced products when they were discussing the loss of manufacturing in the city. They noticed a disconnect between existing manufacturers and local retailers who were offering “New York” products – from taxi cab shot glasses to I Love NY t-shirts – often made out-of-state and overseas. They sought to start a company that would provide shoppers with a one-stop resource for finding products made in NYC. They were tired of seeing small mom and pop enterprises give way to the big box stores taking over and wanted to sell products that truly represented the diverse and vibrant city we live in. Soon after Local Labels was launched.

Litter and Trash Resources – New York

Written by Cathy on April 9, 2009 – 9:01 am -

Help Make Rochester A Litter Bit Better

I have had many emails from people asking where I got my information on Litter Costs in NY. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find NY Information- So I’ve gathered together some links and resources that those who are interested, writing papers and wanna be activists to refer to. (This time with links) Quite honestly, with all the trash and garbage in NY, I am surprised about how little information is available as well as the lack of updated ink and publicity about NY Trash. It is almost like they stopped talking about trash in 2004!

  • In New York City alone, one less grocery bag per person per year would reduce waste by 109 tons and save $11,000 in disposal costs.
  • 1998, the people in New York threw away 29.7 million tons of trash. That’s 3,258 pounds per person or 9 pounds per person per day.
  • An average New York Times Sunday edition produces 8 million pounds (3.6 million kilograms) of waste paper
  • New York Biggest Export- Paper
  • Residental Garbage produced by NYC= 12,000 Tons per day
Rochester 2007- Volunteers put in over 900 hours to collect litter from 161 registered areas. 1,500 pounds of trash came from state highways and 19,600 pounds came from other areas in Rochester. See the map below for areas of Rochester that were picked up

Gotham Gazette- …..According to a report from New Yorkers for Parks, litter was found on 42 percent of city shorelines and broken glass was retrieved on 53 percent of city beaches in 2007. “The largest problem is always the maintenance issue,” said Sheelah Feinberg, director of government and external relations for the advocacy group. “That’s parks citywide.”…………….When originally published, this article incorrectly stated 14 billion gallons of untreated sewage is dumped in our waterways annually. That figure is actually 27 billion gallons of untreated raw sewage and stormwater runoff.

Gothamist- Do New Yorkers Use 3 Billion Plastic Bags per Year

New York Post- 2008-A million New Year’s revelers trashed Times Square with at least 42 tons of party hats, noisemakers and confetti, which an army of city sanitation workers beautifully swept up yesterday. Armed with brooms, 16 mechanical sweepers, 13 collection trucks and 14 leaf blowers, 109 of New York’s Strongest took to the streets to do the heavy lifting. Last year’s New Year’s cleanup cost $37,216 to pick up 42 tons of garbage.

Bottle Bill Resource Guide- (Syracuse) Wright can only daydream about the freedom it would give him in deploying his crews, since 12 to 15 city workers now spend each day bagging litter, much of it plastic bottles

More broadly, we aim to comment on green building generally, using local projects as a vehicle through which to discuss LEED, Green Globes, and the legal and business implications of the sustainable construction, legislation, and insurance initiatives that continue to grip the entire country with increased frequency. Our goal is to become the most comprehensive resource for green building news in New York, and the web’s leader in objectively surveying the sustainable landscape from a wider business and legal perspective. This site is not sponsored by any organization, the views expressed herein are solely those of our authors, and none of our advertisers ever pay for content.
    • New York Trash Map If architecture reflects the history of a neighborhood, then what reflects the history of its inhabitants? Block by block, driveway by driveway, every morning the remnants of our consumption create beauty in the formation of line, volume, color and texture. These ephemeral street sculptures are a glimpse into our wants, needs and aspirations. More then just waste, garbage is the societal fossil that uncovers layer upon layer of nondisposable artifacts. In beauty or disgust, garbage is indeed, a reflection of ourselves

Over the past few months, it has branched out to cover national and international news, products, and the people fighting to make a difference in promoting sustainability. Through this website, we hope to get others involved–not just in community events–but also in national and international discussions or organizations that directly effect the ‘green movement’. Together we can all do a little more to reduce consumption, improve health, and find cleaner alternatives to power the gadgets, cars, and lives we lead today.
    • Ithaca Green Building GBA is a membership-based non-profit corporation. The mission is to promote green building through education, networking, and community involvement. We sponsor a number of local events, such as the Green Building Fair, the National Solar Home Tour, and our annual seminar series each winter, aimed at educating homeowners about different aspects of green building and renovating methods.

This blog will serve as a communication and information portal for the City of Ithaca, Ithaca College, and Cornell University. Everybody involved in making Ithaca sustainable, whether at Cornell, IC, or downtown, is more than welcome to become a regular blogger. In general, bloggers can post about anything related to events, announcements, plans, opinions, international, national, and state news, and requests for recruitment efforts and initiatives. General information about current efforts is also welcome. However, the idea is to make this a place for sharing and community, where ideas, news, and opinions are communicated to the community.
